Displaying help files for older programs(Windows Vista)

By Thursday, February 09, 2012 No comments
In Vista, the help fi les belonging to older programs cannot be opened any more. Still you want to get to the required information.
The program ‘WinHlp32.exe’ serves to access HLP files. It is not part of Vista any more. But you can download it for free from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=82148. After a validation check download the MSU file of the program and install it.
From then on, Windows should display the old HLP files again. If an error occurs in the macro commands used for it, a lock is activated. You can unlock it by making a small change to the registry.
For this, type ‘regedit’ in the input field of the start menu and press the enter key. Confirm the request of user account control with ‘Continue’. Navigate to the key ‘HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WinHelp’. Navigate to ‘Edit | New | DWORDValue’ and open the entry ‘AllowProgrammaticMacros’. Set the ‘Value’ to ‘1’ and confirm the change with ‘OK’. Create one more DWORDValue ‘AllowInternetAccess’ and set it to ‘1’. With this it is possible to also use HLD files from a network drive. After closing the registry the changes become effective.
