Directly integrating hard disk of a virtual PC as a drive(Windows 7)

By Tuesday, February 21, 2012 No comments
Virtual PCs are extremely suitable for special tasks, such as secure surfi ng or at an offi ce that is connected with the company server through VPN. However, what is tiresome is that you have to fi rst start the virtual PC to access the fi les on its hard disk.
Windows 7 provides the option of integrating virtual hard disks of a soft PC created with a Microsoft Virtual PC or the archive of a Windows data backup as a real drive in Windows Explorer. The relevant fi les have the extension ‘VHD’.
The Disk Management is the right starting point for this task. First open the Control Panel and click ‘System and Security’. In the ‘Administrative Tools’ section, click on ‘Create and format a hard disk partition’. In the dialog that appears, ‘Disk Management’, open ‘Action | Attach VHD’, click ‘Browse’ and navigate to the desired VHD file. Click ‘Open’. In the following dialog, you must not select the ‘Write protected’ option since no access will be possible if you do so.
Later, ensure that no modifications are made to the VHD. After clicking ‘OK’, the Disk Management gives a free drive letter, using which you can access the data in Windows Explorer.
After you have removed the data you wanted, you should again un-mount the VHD file, as you can lose data even by mistake. For this, switch to the dialog of the ‘Disk Management’. Now look for the appropriate drive in the lower graphical part of the dialog and right-click the left side with the number of the disk. Select the context command ‘Detach VHD’. In the next dialog, you must not activate the option ‘Delete the virtual hard disk file after removing the disk’; otherwise your data will be ruined. Confirm the dialog with ‘OK’. The Disk Management shows if the disk has been removed successfully or not.
NOTE: Detaching the disk is possible only if all access has been terminated. This basically means closing Windows Explorer and ending all possible connections to the drive.
