Exchange hard disks with Windows 7 tools without reinstallation(Defective Hard Disk)

By Sunday, February 05, 2012 No comments
Windows 7 has notified you that your hard disk is defective. However, your system is working fine and you aren't in the mood to reinstall Windows.
Gone are the days when you needed expensive programs like Norton Ghost to exchange hard disks; Windows 7, like Vista, can do all of that itself. In Control Panel, go to ‘Backup and restore’ and select ‘Set up Backup’. Windows will ask where you’d like to backup the hard disk. You can burn everything onto a DVD, or back it up on an USB hard disk.
Before starting the backup process, ensure that the external hard disk has enough free space and that it is in the NTFS format. You can also back up everything on a second internal hard disk, but it has to be a ‘basic data carrier’. Dynamic drives are rejected as target drives must be converted into a basic data carrier in the data carrier management. Our 60 GB installation via USB 2.0 was copied onto the external hard disk in less than half an hour. The PC must then be be switched off before any defective data is exchanged from mass storage. Then start the PC with the Windows 7 installation DVD. After booting, the installation routine begins. After entering the serial number, Windows asks for details about hard disk partitions. Partition the new hard disk and format it in the NTFS format. The quick formatting method is almost always sufficient.
Cancel the Windows installation and restart the PC with the Windows 7 installation DVD. Select the ‘Repair’ option instead of ‘Installation’. Windows 7 does not find any damaged partition. Click on ‘Next’. From the following options, select ‘Restore computer completely’. The tool searches for backup fi les and fi nds the backup on the connected external drive. Confirm that the Windows 7 tool may overwrite the data on the target drive. After 30 minutes, the porting is done and Windows starts up just fi ne.
