You want to copy all fi les except those
that have a specifi c fi le type via a
command line or a script
Conventional copy commands can be easily restricted to a certain file type using wildcards such as the expression ‘*.tif’. However, to exclude a specific file type when copying, you must know all file types required and copy them individually, or copy all files and then delete the unwanted ones again. While you must explicitly specify all types in the first method, the second method is ineffective. Both problems can be resolved with a copy command that leaves out a specific file type. This is possible with the tool called robocopy that has been provided in Vista and Windows 7. For that, use the filter ‘/xf’ followed by the file type to be left out. If you also have edited TIF files apart from the various JPG and GIF photos in a photo folder, but do not want to copy the large TIF files, use a command such as Robocopy /
xf *.tif
You can even specify several file types by inserting a space and thereby leave them out.
NOTE: The tool robocopy also functions in Windows XP. You can copy it from the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit and use it immediately. Microsoft offers it free of cost at www.microsoft.com/downloads. Search for ‘Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools’.
