You use your notebook for both
stationary use and as a mobile
computer. In order to sustain the
battery for longer durations when
travelling, you must customize the
power options. However, this is not
possible with the standard user
account.
Activate the access to power options for all users. This can be done, by extending the authorizations for a few keys in the registry. Log into the system with the administrator account and open ‘Start | Run’. In the ‘Open’ field, enter ‘regedit’ and click ‘OK’. In the registry editor, navigate to the ‘HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Controls Folder\PowerCfg’ key. Using this key, you can apply security over ‘File | Export’. When doing this, ensure that the ‘Selected part structure’ option is activated, otherwise Windows exports the whole registry.
Both ‘GlobalPowerPolicy’ and ‘PowerPolicies’ keys are located within this key. In order to extend the authorization to this key, right-click on the corresponding entry in the registry and select the ‘Permissions’ context command. In the following dialog box, click on the ‘Advanced’ button located on the lower side of the window and open the ‘Advanced security settings for [key name]’ dialog box. Here, highlight the ‘User [value]’ entry in the ‘Authorization entries’ list and click on ‘Edit’. In the next window, set a checkmark each in the ‘Allow’ box for the ‘Set value’ and ‘Create subkey’ authorizations in the list. Close the dialog box with ‘OK’ and repeat the same procedure for the second key.
After closing the registry editor, restart the computer. Now all users will be able to access and customize the power options.
NOTE: If you add a new group or a new user and allocate only additional rights such as description, you can also allow access to the power options as per your wish only to certain users. In order to restore the original settings, simply double-click on the recently created security fi le of the key.
