Unlocking files blocked by applications without restarting(Windows XP, Vista, 7)

              Windows is stubborn sometimes; it refuses to delete or rename a fi le which was shortly opened by an application. The program was closed long back and there is no reason why the file should be blocked any more. The only thing that helps here is restarting the system which is very annoying.

              The freeware Unlocker helps to remove locks on files at all times. The latest version works in Windows 2000, XP, 2003 and in Vista and Windows 7 as well. You can download it from ‘www.filehippo.com/download_unlocker’. Double-click the file for installation and follow the set up instructions.
             After installation, you will fi nd the new ‘Unlocker’ command in the context menu of a file or folder.
             Use this command for removing existing program accesses that block the relevant object. The tool lists all the processes in a simple dialog box, which are making use of the file at present. Select a process in this list and click ‘Unlock’ to remove this lock specifically. Or, you can just click ‘Unlock all’. With ‘Kill process’, just as the name suggests, you can not only remove the file lock, but also end the process at the same time. Windows ends the relevant program. ‘Exit’ closes the tool.
Note: You can select an action, which Unlocker should execute after unlocking the file, at the lower left edge of the window before the ‘Unlock’, ‘Kill process’ or ‘Unlock all’ commands. You have a choice between ‘No action’, ‘Delete’, ‘Rename’, ‘Move’ and ‘Copy’. The tool asks for any necessary information, e.g. a new file name, for renaming.
