Reduce personalization of ads(iPhone)

By Tuesday, March 06, 2012 , , , , , No comments
Your phone saves data about its geographical location, and you want to prevent this data being misused.
At its default setting, every iPhone records location data which is then sent to Apple's servers for various purposes. As per information provided by Apple, this data is used for the intelligent iAd advertising platform amongst other things. You can however disable the collection of such data as well as the advertisements. Since the update to iOS 4.3.3, location data is no longer saved if geolocation is deactivated. In order to disable the advertisements, go to oo.apple.com from the phone's browser. This unregisters your device from the iAd platform so the ads you see after that are no longer as personalized. If you have multiple iOS devices, you will need to perform the described process for each one individually. Re-registration is also possible using the same method.
There are also tools which can read and show you your phone's stored geolocation data. You will be surprised to know how comprehensively and accurately your iPhone logs movement. iPhone Tracker for Mac OS has been around for a while now. You can download it from petewarden.github.com/iPhoneTracker/#1. A Windows version is available at huseyint.com/iPhoneTrackerWin. Both tracker tools are very easy to install and operate. Of course, an iPhone is a basic pre-requisite for using these programs.

Read documents in EPUB, CHM, DOC and DJVU formats(Amazon Kindle)

By Wednesday, February 22, 2012 No comments
You find the limitations of the Kindle with regard to fi le formats annoying. You want to change that, but without taking any kind of risk.
Duokan is a firmware extension that can be installed and uninstalled on Kindle without aff ecting the existing configuration of the device. Thanks to this extension, Kindle can now work with EPUB, CHM, DOC and DJVU formats as well. Duokan is available for Kindle 2, 3 and DX. The fi rmware has been developed by a Chinese company. You can visit their website at www.duokan.com. Since this site is completely in Chinese, you can download the latest version using the link tinyurl.com/22ke39p. This version has an English user interface which makes it extremely easy. Duokan is not only an EPUB reader but it also makes it possible to change the font size and to hide the white borders of PDFs. You can install it on your Kindle as follows:

  • Download Duokan from the Internet.
  • Connect your Kindle to your computer via USB.
  • Open the Duokan RAR archive and copy the folders “DK_System”, “DK-Documents” and “DK_Pictures” to the root directory of your Kindle.
  • Also copy all .BIN fi les from the folder (k3 stands for Kindle 3) into the Kindle root directory.
  • Remove the USB cable.
  • Ensure that your Kindle is fully charged.
  • Now press the “Home” button and then “Menu”. Select “Settings” and then press “Menu” once again. Now select “Update Your Kindle”.
  • After a restart, quickly press [Q] to load Duokan. If you press [W], the original firmware is used. If you have not been quick enough, go to “Settings” via “Home” and “Menu” and press “Menu” again. Select “Restart” and now try to press [Q] more quickly than before.
  • After Duokan has been started, press “Menu” again and then [J] to confi gure the settings. Now go to the third page and select [D] to select the language. Select [C] for English.
  • In the settings, you can then add the E-Books from your original installation to Duokan. For this, go to “Home”, press “Menu” and select “Settings”. Then go to the third page, select "Other” and change the fl ag for the entry “Support old system” to “Yes”. You can also pack the E-books in the folder “DK_Documents” to use it exclusively under Duokan.

In order to do away with the borders of PDFs, open the PDF, press “Aa” and select “Screen Zoom A”. In order to change the font size, press “Aa” when the PDF is open and select “Smart Layer”. If you then press “Aa” again, you can change the font size. However the result of this adaptation is not satisfactory. Similarly, the WLAN connection is also not satisfying. For instance, WPA2 was not supported so far. If Duokan crashes, you can reset it by keeping the power button pressed for 15 seconds.
To uninstall Duokan, just delete the “DK_System”, “DK_Documents” and “DK-Pictures” from the root directory.

Configure network shares in your Windows home network(WDTV live)

By Wednesday, February 22, 2012 No comments
You want to make the network shares which Windows Media Player views also accessible to your WDTV Media Center, and access their contents on your TV. But it does not work somehow.
Before you begin with the configuration of Windows Media Player, you must check a few basic conditions and settings. Naturally, you need Windows 7 or Windows Vista for this; Windows XP users are not included. The account with which you are logged in must have administrative permissions for configuring some of these settings (to change administrator permissions, find the required settings under ‘Control Panel | User Accounts Add/remove user accounts’).
The name of your server should not contain non-standard characters such as ä, ö, ü, etc. You can fi nd your computer name by right clicking ‘Desktop’ and then clicking ‘Properties’. If the computer name contains accented characters, you can change this under ‘Change settings’. As for the network settings, you should ensure that your WDTV device can be detected by Windows on the network. A click on ‘Network’ in the Start menu will show all devices that can be discovered. If your WDTV can be seen here under ‘Media Devices’, then everything is OK. If not, you must change the network settings in the ‘Network and Sharing Center’ accordingly.
Now open Windows Media Player and go to ‘Stream | Turn on media streaming…;. Click the ‘Configure Shares’ button. In the next window, activate your WDTV device which shows up in the list. Now go to ‘Customize…’. Here, you can select the media that must be forwarded to your WDTV. Then close the window with ‘OK’.

How can substandard cables affect the quality of video and sound?(Cable)

By Tuesday, February 21, 2012 No comments
Users spend thousands for the best AV equipment. However, proper cabling is crucial to get the best out of what your gizmos can off er.
High-end home entertainment setups, which include the TV, DVD player, stereo system and game console, come with innumerable connectivity options. But, they aren't necessarily accompanied by the best cabling options and users tend to make do with bundled cables. Usually, the media output is inferior, hence spoiling the user experience.
Primarily, digital connections such as S/PDIF, HDMI and DVI-D should be preferred to other standard options. This ensures that whatever signal is sent by the equipment is received by the display or playback device, thus providing lossless A/V quality.
Digital standards such as S/PDIF and HDMI provide the actual digital signals, which deteriorate when sent via other cable standards. Below those two in terms of quality is the component connection (YUV); then comes S-video, and lastly, composite video (single yellow RCA plug). So if you’re using composite video, consider using HDMI, especially if your TV and DVD are compatible. SCART is actually just a plug which has 21 pins for transfer. It always depends on the combination of the player and the playback device to decide which signal has to be transferred and which of the transferred signals is actually to be used for the reproduction.

Download new firmware updates for SSDs(SSDs)

By Tuesday, February 21, 2012 No comments
You want to be ahead of all and have purchased an SSD. After initial exceptional performance, you feel that performance has declined strongly.
The latest generation of SSD controllers handles, in theory, six gigabytes of data per second. This is necessary as, in the mean time, the fl ash runs fast but is thwarted by the slow 3 Gbit SATA controller.
But new models diversity of the problems ranges from an incorrect or insufficient Trim function to booting issues. An April firmware update was supposed to solve these problems, but judging by forum reactions, more serious breakdowns were brought on. Finally, a new fi rmware update is available that rectifies all errors.
ATTENTION: With a firmware update, all the data on the SSD is deleted. You must create a backup beforehand. OCZ has also recently published a SSD firmware update. The Vertex Limited Edition could become unusable without warning without this update. The manufacturer urgently recommends updating to the latest firmware.
CAUTION: In contrast to several other SSD updates, this one is only suitable for the OZC Vertex Limited Edition. SSDs from other manufacturers, which use the same SandForceController, do not gain anything from this update. For e.g. the Corsair Force (with identical SandForce Controller) is not affected by the problems of the OCZ SSD. Power-saving mechanisms at the root of the problems with the OCZs are switched off in the Corsair SSD.

How to improve the sound from your speakers by following the correct installation procedures.(Loud speaker)

By Tuesday, February 21, 2012 No comments
Audiophiles invest hoards of cash into high-end speakers, but what good is the equipment if you don’t get the best out of it?
There are few crucial things to be kept in mind when installing speakers. Firstly, you must fi nd a right spot to place them. An ideal place is the living room; it has a rectangular or quadratic fl oor space, and usually, the TV and the couch face each other. However, in many cases, the layout or placement options of furniture might vary. In such cases, position the speakers where the front speakers are facing your seating arrangement and on either side of the TV, and the rear speakers are at either side of the seating. If you have a center speaker, place it close to the TV.
The placement of the subwoofer does not hold much importance as the ear can hardly locate the low-frequency sound waves it transmits. Ensure that you don’t mismatch the speaker cables with their connectors; minus sign always connect with minus, and plus goes to plus. If a speaker is connected wrongly, it may lead to local frequency obliteration, leading to unsatisfactory sound quality. The proper length of cables is also a determining factor. While a few centimeters should not matter, there should not be a major difference (2 or 3 meters) in the length of cables of each speaker. All speakers should have the same length. If one cable is much longer, you can always tactfully hide it behind the cabinet or the speaker shelf. High-Fi stereo systems cope with different signal runs either automatically or manually.
There are further requirements for the cables in terms of cable cross-section and material. We recommend the normal cabling meant for a living room, i.e. 1.5 to 2.5 mm² cross-section and copperstrand wires. A thicker cross-section and usage of special metals (silver, gold) is not at all necessary. When everything is in place, you must also prevent the possibility of the sound from the box reaching the floor, which can result in uncontrollable sound.

Pentax K10D adapting for external flash(Digital camera)

By Tuesday, February 21, 2012 , No comments
Your Pentax K10D is more than three years old. For an upcoming celebration, you buy an external fl ash card. Unfortunately, it does not work.
In the early K10Ds from Pentax, the built-in fl ash support does not allow the use of external fl ash cards. The manufacturer corrected this problem with fi rmware version 1.1 in 2007. Pentax now off ers fi rmware version 1.31 that naturally contains the changes of the previous updates. Download the new fi rmware and unzip it on your PC.
Insert an SD storage card in your card reader and format it for the update procedure. The card must be of minimum 32 MB capacity. Copy the fi rmware data ‘fwdc162b.bin’ directly in the root directory of the card. Insert the SD card in the camera and switch it on. Keep the menu button pressed and follow the instructions on the camera display, till the message ‘Complete’ is seen.

Improve mouse speed considerably for Mac OS X(iMac)

By Tuesday, February 21, 2012 No comments
The work space of your 27-inch iMac is sufficient. However, to get the mouse pointer from one edge of the screen to the other takes too much space.
The intelligent freeware tool from www.benh57.com makes the mouse pointer faster. While the maximum setting of Apple OS X shows is 1.7, with the mouse zoom, the value easily scales up to 10. Setting the speed to 6 or 7 will allow you to navigate across the screen with ease. The mouse zoom is especially recommended for using several monitors in integration. After the installation, you will fi nd the mouse zoom in system tools, and the usage is self-explanatory.

Using virtual optical media without software installation(Virtual CD)

By Sunday, February 19, 2012 No comments
You have ISO fi les of important tools on your USB stick and want to mount the ISOs onto a Virtual Drive, without having to install programs like Daemon Tools or Virtual CD.
Luckily, Microsoft has already made available the ‘Virtual CDRom Control Panel’. This freeware tool is only 50 Kb in size and contains everything you need. The virtual drive can be integrated using the Control Panel without the need of an installation, and can also be removed when not in use. The only condition is that the tool requires administrator rights in all cases. The latest version works under Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. You only need a few mouse-clicks to integrate an ISO file. First start the ‘VcdControlTool’ program and click on ‘Driver Control’. Select the file called ‘VcdRom.sys’ to install, which is also contained in the archive. Press ‘Start’ to activate the driver. You can now create a new virtual CDROM drive with ‘Add Drive’ and can integrate any ISO file with ‘Mount’. If you no longer need the file and the drive, proceed as follows: Eject | Remove Drive | Stop Driver | Remove Driver.

How to save power to make work on the move more efficient and comfortable?(Notebooks)

By Sunday, February 19, 2012 No comments
Proper settings to save battery power allow longer battery runtime, making daily computing chores seamless.
In XP, go to 'Control panel | Power Options', and there you’ll fi nd various power schemes like Portable/Laptop, Presentation, etc. In Windows 7, go to 'Start | Control Panel | Hardware and Sound | Power options'. You’ll see two main power options - High Performance and Balanced. You can even customize your own power option. When you click on ‘Change Plan Settings’, you’ll notice a number of options. For instance, you can set the monitor brightness, its turn-off time, and make changes to the energy saving mode. In the ‘Change advanced power options’ window, there are drop down menus for each option. You can specify what must happen if you close the laptop lid, or push the power button, or after how much time the laptop should go into hibernation, and so on. These options can be very useful when you leave your laptop unattended, but automation has its downside too. For instance, if you’re recording a video or downloading data and the laptop automatically shuts down, it can be irritating. Nonetheless, these settings can be changed with very little eff ort and in a few steps. You need not make changes to all the settings, and use only what concerns you, such as turning off only the monitor when the downloads are on.

Displaying photos edited on a PC on a camera(Panasonic Lumix)

By Sunday, February 19, 2012 , No comments
You can take pictures from the camera and see them on the PC. The reverse is not true with your Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1: if you fi ll the memory card with photos from the PC and insert them in the camera, it does not display these pictures.
Like all other cameras, Lumix DMC-G1 also expects a specifi c fi le structure on the data carrier. This can be compared to the hard disk of your computer: if you move the System32 folder from the Windows directory to another location in the folder structure, Windows will stop working. The operating system is designed for this fi xed folder structure.
For the Panasonic camera to find the image fi les, it needs the ‘107_PANA’ sub folder, which is in the ‘DCIM’ folder. Along with ‘DCIM’, the folders ‘MISC’ and ‘PRIVATE’ must also be present at the lowest folder level. It is important that all names be written in the upper case.

Comfortably optimizing home entertainment devices for the WLAN(Receivers, players, consoles)

By Saturday, February 11, 2012 No comments
Your Blu-ray player could also play contents from your home network. But it only has one RJ45 port and you do not wish to have a network cable across the room.
Netgear has a solution for your problem. The WNCE2001 is a WLAN bridge that lets every networkcompatible device (with an RJ45 port) transmit wirelessly. Whether it is a Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360 or your new Blu-ray player, you can use it to access the resources of your home network and the Internet without a cable mess. The best part is that the Netgear bridge can also cover your power requirements using a USB connection. The bridge supports 802.11 N Wireless LAN and all the latest encryption procedures up to WPA2. The device weighs in at about 50 g and is approximately as large as a cigarette pack. A possible application of the bridge can also be to view content on a network-compatible TV. The power of the small box comfortably suffices for HD video at 1080p.

Preserve the durability of your ink cartridges even in case of infrequent use.(Inkjet printer)

By Saturday, February 11, 2012 No comments
You barely use your printer. However, every time you do need to use it, you face a problem with the ink cartridge of the printer; it has dried up. You end up buying new cartridges before time although the old ones are still relatively full.
Simple measures effectively prevent the untimely drying up of the cartridges. The fi rst step is to check the position. If your printer is located in an extremely warm spot, consider changing the location. Warm, dry air from the heater for instance, considerably accelerates the drying process. An exaggerated tendency to economize is equally dangerous.
All those who use their PC workstation disconnected from the mains possibly prevent the printer head from going into the standby position. But here, the printing nozzles are sealed against drafts and dry up to a great extent. It is good if you if you print a so-called nozzle test pattern, at the latest, a month after the last print. This theoretically uses every single nozzle and uses considerably lesser ink than a cleaning process, where the nozzles are thoroughly perfused. You will fi nd a nozzle test in the print driver menu under the key words ‘Maintenance’ or ‘Printer services’.

Take into account the focal length extension factor when buying a lens(Digital camera)

By Saturday, February 11, 2012 , No comments
You were extremely happy when you got a good bargain on eBay. But you are now disappointed after some of the pictures with your new 18 mm lens. Instead of the expected eff ect of an extreme wide angle, the lens barrel is making subjects appear very plain and undistorted. What is wrong?
Most of the image sensors in digital cameras are considerably smaller than the 35 mm format in analog cameras, which are rectangular and 24 x 36 mm in size. It is established as a fixed standard for comparison, with which the impression of different focal lengths can be described. Digital SLRs mostly use a so-called APS-C sensor (Advanced Photo System Classic) with page lengths of approximately 16 x 24 mm. As a result of this smaller sensor, the same lens, unlike a 35 mm sensor, maps only a smaller section of the subject projected through it. This is called focal length extension. This image circle factor is 1.5 in most SLRs, 1.6 in Canon and 2.0 in Olympus. When a 50 mm lens is used, the photogenic focal length is thus actually 75 mm in most cases and in case of Olympus, 100 mm. The focal length extension is a blessing for Tele-fans, but the situation is diff erent when it comes to the wide angle area. From your 18 mm extreme wide angle, an Olympus DSLR gives a standard focal length of 36 mm with a correspondingly good image mapping. For the desired wide angle effect, you need a DSLR lens with extremely short focal lengths. Their technical composition is, however, quite complex and are accordingly expensive.

Make your troublesome scanner work even on the new Windows 7 OS(Older hardware)

By Saturday, February 11, 2012 No comments
You have moved on from XP to Windows 7 but your good old scanner does not support the system. Does it have to be thrown out now?
Simply virtualize Windows XP on your Windows 7 system. The only prerequisite is that your CPU should also have a virtualization enabled or present. If you are not sure, run the ‘havdetectiontool.exe’ program. To be able to download this tool simply search for the application using Google. Now navigate to ‘www.microsoft.com/ windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx’ to find instructions and tools to integrate the virtual XP system in your Windows 7 system. The download is slightly over 500 MB and so takes a while.
Now install the packages according to the instructions. You will see Windows XP as a window of your Win 7 system. On the top edge of the window, you will see a tab for USB ports. Here you can decide which of these ports should be ‘diverted’ to the XP system. After the connection is set up, the display changes to ‘enabled’. This way the connection can be removed later if required. Now install the XP driver for the scanner. Since you access both systems on the hard disk as well as the network, the device does not get in the way.

Stop your computer from slowing down when it is writing(Solid-state drives)

By Saturday, February 11, 2012 No comments
You have fitted your notebook with an SSD disk and given it an enormous power push. And even though Windows 7 off ers special SSD support, the Solid State Disk keeps slowing down.
It does seem very run-of-the-mill but a firmware update can really solve all your SSD problems.
The focal question when it comes to the write speed of SSD or fl ash disks is whether the fl ash cell that needs to be described is empty. If not, it has to be deleted first and that needs a lot of time. Windows 7 is the fi rst OS that identifi es SSDs and empties unused fl ash cells in the background, if no others are available. The prerequisite for this is that the SSD has to support the trim command. This is usually the case with current models. But if you jumped on to the SSD bandwagon early, you need a firmware update. All manufacturers provide updates and you can download these from their websites.
The upgrade itself is child’s play. The latest generation of Intel SSDs is an exception. In these disks, changing the firmware is not limited to the trim command but it also dramatically increases the write speed by almost 100 percent. Unfortunately, this performance has to be paid off with an equally dramatic deterioration of access times. Since a change in access times is more obvious, at least Intel SSD owners who do not have Window 7 need to consider whether they actually want to opt for an update or just a ‘manual’ clearing of the disk from time to time. That way quick access times remain untouched.

How to clean the image sensor of a DSLR camera?(Professional tip)

By Saturday, February 11, 2012 , No comments
When photos from a DSLR camera appear with black spots, cleaning the sensor of the camera can be really helpful. It’s a tricky operation, but absolutely worthwhile.
The vacation was great, and your camera captured some memorable moments. However, random black spots appearing on the bright blue sky can be irritating to look at, and cannot be removed other than processing them on a PC. If, this is the case, you can take it for granted that there are dust particles on the image sensor of your DSLR.
Modern cameras are equipped with a sensor-cleaning mechanism, but many older models aren't. Dust particles usually enter the camera when one is changing the lens. When you take pictures, they are deposited on the sensor or, to be precise, on the low pass fi lter lying in front of it. This is why these disturbing spots aren't really prominent on every picture. The longer the focal length and smaller the aperture, the more clearly visible these particles tend to be.
If you can't clean the sensor, you can use alternate methods to get better pictures. Use the aperture priority given in the camera for photographing most of the sky and select a bigger aperture, say 1:4 or 1:5.6. In doing so your chances of ignoring these spots are higher. You can even clear the spots using clone stamp while editing the image on a PC. If these options don’t sound like the ultimately solution, then cleaning the sensor certainly would. While this task can be handed over to a photo studio or camera manufacturer, it costs a minimum sum and a couple of days to do it on your own.
PREPARE WELL: You need a cleaning kit and a mini-blower. The camera battery must be charged completely. Shooting a test photo will show you where the dirt is. Shoot a white screen using aperture priority, the smallest aperture (1:22 or 1:32), longer focal length, and keep the focus to infinity, with the screen only a few centimeters away. Then, arrange for an automatic tonal value correction in image editing. SUPPORT THE CAMERA: Mount the camera on a tripod so that both your hands are available during work. Use caution and clean the entire body from outside before removing the lens. Also, ensure that the place you’re doing the cleaning should be properly lit up and tools are ready. You don’t want to waste time because the camera is extremely susceptible to dust when the reflector and lock have been opened.
CLEAN THE REFLECTOR CASE: It makes sense to remove all the dust from the reflector case, so that it doesn't settle back on the sensor after you've cleaned it. Clean the reflector and the focusing screen using the blower. Carefully push the reflector up and use the blower to clean the lower part of the reflector glass and also the exposed shutter curtain.
PREPARE THE SPATULA: In the kit, you’ll also find 100 poly knit one-time use wipers. At the time of delivery, the cleaning spatula is already wrapped up completely with a cloth. For later use, wrap the spatula with a new cloth and fi x it using an adhesive tape. Ensure that the base is absolutely clean and the top of the wrapped spatula does not come in contact with anything.
ACTIVATE THE INSPECTION MODE: Access the camera menu and go to system settings (screw-wrench symbol). If there are only seven or fewer points mentioned here, go to ‘Menu selection’ and select ‘Detailed’. Now scroll down to the ‘Inspection’ point and confirm with ‘OK’. Now when you press the shutter release button, the reflector is folded up and the lock is opened. However, the sensor remains closed.
APPLY THE SOLUTION: Open the lock and clean the sensor a few times using the blower to remove the coarse dust. Now, put three to four drops of the ‘Eclipse’ cleaning solution on the wrapped spatula. The solution has toxic and pure Methanol, which evaporates very quickly and without leaving any residue. Quickly go over to step 7 before the spatula dries.
WET CLEANING OF SENSOR: Now, using the spatula, wipe from top left to right by gently pressing the sensor. Begin from the left-hand-side with the spatula in an inclined position. It should be pointed vertically on the sensor to the right-handside edge. Now, take the spatula below, incline it in the other direction and repeat the procedure by keeping the mirror inverted. Close the camera.
RESULTS: It is recommended that you shoot a test photo just like you did in step 1. If, even now, the spots are clearly visible, you need to repeat the process with a fresh, clean cloth. In our case, the cleaning of a very dirty sensor was a successful in the fi rst attempt, but results will of course vary.

Shake free photographs without a tripod(Accessories)

By Saturday, February 11, 2012 , No comments
A tripod is essential for many interesting shots. All the same you don’t like dragging a heavy tripod in your holidays. Is there an alternative?
Actually a tripod weighing a few kilos can be a burden even for a backpacker. Building a makeshift tripod at the holiday spot is an alternative. Use a cloth bag or a paper bag fi lled with sand. Dried beans or lentils are lighter and also suitable. The camera can be placed on this sack and aligned. Additionally, activate the self timer in the camera. This has an advantage, avoiding a blurred shot by manual trigger. Lean against the wall or fi nd a place to support your arm for not very long exposure times. There are railings and walls. A monopod off ers a good compromise between weight and stability. These telescopic rods can screwed on to tripod sockets. Choose a quick fastening clamp for the telescope mechanism.

Continue using an old scanner with Windows 7(Scanner)

By Thursday, February 09, 2012 No comments
You have a rather old USB scanner, which indeed still works fl awlessly, but for which there are no Vista and Windows 7 drivers any more. You want to absolutely avoid a new purchase.
Use your scanner or also other USB devices, for which there are no drivers for Windows 7 or Vista, in a virtual machine. Unfortunately all virtualizers do not work in the same way: Out of the three big applications MS Virtual PC, VMWare and VirtualBox, only the last two deal with USB devices, which require their own driver. If you are not using any of the mentioned tools until now, we recommend you use VirtualBox from Sun. In contrast to VMWare, the program is completely free and can be easily used. Follow the instructions and install a classic XP in the virtual box. After that you can install and use your scanner as usual. If you already have VirtualPC from Microsoft in use and your virtual XP system is fully installed, you can also run it using VirtualBox or VMWare. Both tools allow to link VHD drives created by VirtualPC. The procedure is similar in each case: Open the dialog for linking of virtual hard disk and under ‘File Type’ choose ‘VHD files’ or ‘Microsoft Virtual PC files’ as the case may be. Mark your Virtual PC disk (VHD file) and make it the boot drive. As the XP is now in a new virtual environment, first of all, a small driver installation starts, which usually happens without assistance from the user. After that, though, everything should run as desired. You can connect your scanner to the redirected USB port of the virtual XP PC and also install all drivers and processing software that are needed.
