Even after you buy a new PC which
is pre-loaded with Windows 7, you
obviously want to transfer your crucial
data and system settings from your old
computer to this new one.
For this task, you can use Microsoft’s free utility called Windows Easy-Transfer. Once you’ve established an Internet connection on your old computer, and installed Windows 7 on your new one, the tool can even transfer data from the new PC to the old one. On the new PC, double-click the program icon, select the transfer medium and in the following dialog box click ‘This is the target computer’ option. Answer the following prompt with ‘No’ and subsequently click on ‘Install this program now’ option. Again, select the desired transfer medium, for instance a USB stick, so that Windows 7 can copy the tool there. From this USB stick you can install the Windows EasyTransfer tool on another computer.
Now, start the tool on your old computer, click on ‘Continue’ and in the subsequent window select the desired transfer medium. The tool can carry this data transfer through a USB EasyTransfer cable, directly over the network, or with a removable storage medium. In the next step, click on the ‘this is the source computer’ option. Windows will now search for all the accounts that have been set up and compile the relevant information. With the help of the ‘Customize’ option under each account, you can specify details, as to which data and settings must be transferred, for example documents, music, photos, e-mails, favorites, videos and much more. All elements are selected by default. In the next step you can set a password. Click on ‘Save’, specify the memory location and the name of the EasyTransfer fi le and confi rm it with ‘Save’. Now start the tool on the new PC that has Windows 7, select the Easy- Transfer fi le with the ‘.MIG’ extension and integrate the data in the new system.
